Bike Town's Belles

The journey has begun for the Queens Baton, the royal signal of the Commonwealth Games, to make its way from its home in Glasgow all the way to its new destination of Gold Coast in Australia.

To celebrate the legacy those games in 2014 have left this city and its surrounding areas, the Queens Baton Relay will pass through areas which have seen a regeneration because of the Commonwealth Legacy Fund.

Healthy n Happy have been invited along to be part of one of the legs and oversee the passing of the baton to Rob Wardell, Team Scotland cyclist and members of Bike Town! The group will follow a route around the attractions of Cuningar Loop before returning to Cuningar Footbridge to pass on the baton where it will be taken to the Emirates Arena.

Bike Town are inviting anyone interested in taking part in the Relay to join them on their Guided Rides taking place earlier in the day. For full info and to RSVP please see the links below:

Building Better Communities (ABCD)

The South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership held a number of public events to introduce the Asset-Based Community Development model. Titled Building Better Communities the events gathered representatives from across South Lanarkshire organisations to come together and plan how everyone can work to help facilitate communities to improve through needs detailed by the residents who live in them.

Here are videos documenting the events and their purpose as well as a case study of the ABCD model in action:

The first sets out the premise and overview of BCC. It’s available to view here:https://vimeo.com/224470868

The second film, available here: https://vimeo.com/224648885 shows what some people thought of the initial conversation - in three words

Last, but by no means least, Rikki Duncan, who attended the Lanark event, set out with a vision of starting a walking football fixture in Biggar.  Just a few weeks later and Rikki’s achieved his dream, with some 20 young and old people now meeting for the weekly game. Rikki’s film is available at this link:https://vimeo.com/228646765

Young People Assist in Consultation

Healthy n Happy have been working in partnership with young people, shopkeepers and the community in general to find out what people think about smoking and tobacco use in our community. Through this research we hope to find out where and how tobacco products are accessed by young people and what the thoughts and opinions on smoking and tobacco use by young people are.

We worked alongside 23 young people who were keen to be involved in the development of the questionnaire and to go out and ask their peers, neighbours, group users, organisations and shopkeepers of their opinions.

We have just concluded the face to face surveys and will now be collating all the opinions which will form a report.  This will be shared with the wider community as soon as possible and we are delighted with the wide range of opinions from the community.

GSK Impact Award Win

Charity wins award for keeping Cambuslang and Rutherglen  ‘healthy n happy’

Healthy n Happy Community Development Trust has beaten more than 400 organisations from all over the UK to be one of the 10 winners of the 2017 GSK IMPACT Awards, a national award that recognises excellence in charities improving health and wellbeing in their communities. The charity will receive £30,000 in funding as part of its prize, as well as expert support and development from The King’s Fund.

The charity covers Cambuslang and Rutherglen – towns with a proud history but now affected by high levels of poverty and prevalence of long-term health conditions. Healthy n Happy, which is governed by local people and steered by their needs and priorities, runs services to increase confidence and self-esteem, to boost skills and relationships, and to raise awareness of health issues and healthy living.

These include community radio station CamGlen Radio, which broadcasts 24 hours a day, seven days a week, and the Bike Town initiative, which promotes cycling and has campaigned successfully for improved cycle infrastructure.

From parent cafes where parents support each other, to DJs on CamGlen Radio, volunteers are key to Healthy n Happy’s strategy. The charity has 245 volunteers, helping it to engage with more than 7,000 people last year, and its volunteers cover many different areas and skill types.

Lisa Weaks, Head of Third Sector at The King’s Fund, said: ‘Healthy n Happy brings people together and supports them in taking control of their own health and wellbeing. Working in a community facing significant health challenges, it’s a dynamic and effective force for positive change.

‘The judging panel was impressed by the charity’s support for volunteers and how its work is so clearly shaped by local needs. Healthy n Happy is an inspiring example of a charity working closely with the community it serves and is a worthy winner of a GSK IMPACT Award.’

Brendan Rooney, Executive Director of Healthy n Happy, said: ‘We are delighted to have won this award. It is so pleasing to see the hard work and efforts of our volunteers and staff recognised by GSK and The King’s Fund. We’re determined to see Cambuslang and Rutherglen become the healthiest and happiest places to live in Scotland and this award is another important step in achieving that ambition.’

Developing leaders in the charity sector is an important aim of the GSK IMPACT Awards programme, which has now been running for 20 years, and Healthy n Happy will have access to training and leadership development tailored to its needs. It will also be invited to join the GSK IMPACT Awards Network, a national network of more than 70 award-winning health and wellbeing charities working together to develop their leaders, find new ways of working, and support others.

Healthy n Happy will receive its prize at a ceremony held at the Science Museum in London on Thursday 18 May, along with nine other GSK IMPACT Award winners.
