Become a ReConnect volunteer

Role Title: ReConnect 1:1 Volunteer

Location: Throughout the Cambuslang, Rutherglen and East Kilbride areas

Do you want to make a difference to the lives of local older people? Do you have a spare 2/3 hours a week?  ReConnect is an exciting new project and is currently recruiting volunteers who can help to tackle isolation which affects so many in the local community.  The volunteer would help support an individual to get out and about, helping them access services and activities.  ReConnect volunteers support older people by getting to know them so they can build up their confidence to try different community activities that interest them in the local area.

Following training you will be matched up with an older person - this may include individuals who have physical and mental disabilities, who are potentially frail, vulnerable and/or have long-term conditions who have been referred to the service.  You will visit the individual at home or at their current residence weekly over a period of approximately 6 months.  During this time it is hoped that you develop a friendship and work with the older people to identify their interests and skills and support the to link into existing local services, clubs and opportunities in their area.  As the older person gets involved in activities and service the 1:1 support will slowly decrease allowing the volunteer, if they wish, to help another isolated individual.

PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS OPPORTUNITY IS ONLY OPEN TO THOSE WHO STAY WITHIN THE CAMBUSLANG AND RUTHERGLEN AREA

If you would like further information on any of the volunteer roles listed or any of our other volunteer roles, please cal us on 0141 646 0123 or email transforminglives@healthynhappy.org.uk

Building Better Communities (ABCD)

The South Lanarkshire Health and Social Care Partnership held a number of public events to introduce the Asset-Based Community Development model. Titled Building Better Communities the events gathered representatives from across South Lanarkshire organisations to come together and plan how everyone can work to help facilitate communities to improve through needs detailed by the residents who live in them.

Here are videos documenting the events and their purpose as well as a case study of the ABCD model in action:

The first sets out the premise and overview of BCC. It’s available to view here:https://vimeo.com/224470868

The second film, available here: https://vimeo.com/224648885 shows what some people thought of the initial conversation - in three words

Last, but by no means least, Rikki Duncan, who attended the Lanark event, set out with a vision of starting a walking football fixture in Biggar.  Just a few weeks later and Rikki’s achieved his dream, with some 20 young and old people now meeting for the weekly game. Young People Assist in Consultation

Healthy n Happy have been working in partnership with young people, shopkeepers and the community in general to find out what people think about smoking and tobacco use in our community. Through this research we hope to find out where and how tobacco products are accessed by young people and what the thoughts and opinions on smoking and tobacco use by young people are.

We worked alongside 23 young people who were keen to be involved in the development of the questionnaire and to go out and ask their peers, neighbours, group users, organisations and shopkeepers of their opinions.

We have just concluded the face to face surveys and will now be collating all the opinions which will form a report.  This will be shared with the wider community as soon as possible and we are delighted with the wide range of opinions from the community.
