Jodie Phillips - University Placement September 2013 - January 2014

I am currently studying Community Education at Strathclyde University, and will hopefully have gained my degree by summer time.  As part of my 4th year, I was required to complete a 4 month work placement.  I contacted Healthy n Happy pretty much straight away as I was very keen to work within my own community, and as a local resident of Cambuslang I had heard great things about the organisation.  Being a mum to an energetic 2 year old, as well as a student, I was slightly anxious about how I was going to manage with the addition of a full time placement, but Healthy n Happy have been fabulous in allowing me to work around family life.  Not long after I started with them, I was involved in their AGM which allowed me to meet some of the local people who Healthy n Happy work with.  I was also able to attend Scotland’s Mental Health First Aid training which I would recommend to everyone, it has improved my understanding of Mental Health and I feel more confident if I was speaking with someone who was in a crisis situation.  I have been encouraged to take on new responsibilities and gain new skills but with the support of the full team.  I can honestly say that I have been made to feel extremely welcome by all of the staff; it has been a pleasure to come in every day.  I feel very fortunate to have been supported by an experienced and knowledgeable organisation like HnH.

I have been volunteering at Healthy n Happy for about 4 or 5 years doing radio broadcasts about mental health, giving talks about my journey with depression, helping to compile a book about mental health, taking part in mental health film festival projects, building and maintaining websites for other local charities and many more things in my community. I felt humbled to have recently received a SLC Community Service Award. Read my full blog

"Just a wee update to let you know where I am now. I am into my 4th month working on the Station Maintenance Team with ScotRail. We do all the maintenance work on the stations from Oban to Bridge of Orchy. It is a fantastic job. I want to thank you and all at H`n`H for all your help, training and support.  I have absolutely no doubt that I could not have achieved my present happiness without H`n`H being there for me.
Keep up the good work.
